May PAC meeting 2011

North PAC May 3, 2011

Introductions

Treasure report:
Toy swap made $31.50
Plant sale: we sold 97 plants and made $488.79 net profit
We purchased toys/ blocks for Mona Moede ($315.88)

Motion Sharon, second Annette, approved that Aqueelah get a cash box.
Billi has a cash box that she will donate.

Vehicle day by South PAC is scheduled and announcements were handed out at classes
End of year Picnic is on May 26th at Waban Park

Toy/ Book Swap:
We will give $40.00 to the Hall International After School Program
Sharon moved and Valerie seconded; all approved.
Hall will do a uniform exchange on Aug 25th. Discussed the possibility of a toy/book swap same day, but it is not feasible due to summer hiatus. We will put toy/book swap on the planning for next year in conjunction with the mid-year uniform exchange, if Hall has one. Contact for Hall parent group is Ariah Fine, and for the school is Lawanda.

ACTION: Ariah will set up a new site. Manu will add the last three months of minutes to the site.

Momcation/ next year events
Discussion of several possible events:

Have a healthy family event: (yoga for families, eating right speaker, activities to reduce, reuse,recycle, YMCA on Broadway and other ways to promote fitness). Maybe tie in to another event, perhaps hosting a booth or going to a festival.
Perhaps ECFE could go to some of the summer festivals: Juneteenth, Family Festival, etc.

Put some money toward signage to promote ECFE

Have a Momcation that is not funded by the PAC. Is there a way to create a break for parents?
Sharon moved, Aqueelah second: we table this discussion to fall.

April PAC Meeting 2011

North Parent Advisory Council meeting April 5, 2011

Attendees: Annette Gagliardi, Valerie Matthews, Laura Oksnevad, Sharon Bartlett, Billi White, Rosario Cortes Dominguez , Sonia Silvestre, Lucrecia Velasquez Rivera, Sara Parias Pineda, Manu Ericksen, Kelly Browne, Aqueelah Worthen, Ellen Roth- Unzicker, Sharon Bartlett

Book and toy swap: Will take place in Hall International cafeteria, 1601 Aldrich AV N 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., April 15. Everyone is encouraged to bring toys and children’s and parenting books they no longer need. All items will sell for $.25 each. Drop donations at Hall any time before the sale begins.
TO DO in prep for sale:

Billi will create table signs (infant, ages 1, 2, 3. 4 and 5 yr) and posters for the building and halls—directions to the cafeteria).

Set up will begin at 1:00, with volunteers Manu, Laura, Billi, Sharon and Aqueelah.

Annette will arrange for the playroom to be open and supervised.

Aqueelah will bring coin and small dollar change for the sale.

Laura, Sharon and Billi will try to stay through clean-up, depending on stamina of their kids. Billi will take items that did not sell to Salvation Army or other organization.


Plant Sale: The due date for all order forms is Friday, April 8.
TO DO in prep for sale:

Annette will photocopy the order forms and give them to Sophie on April 8.

Sophie and Celine will work together to finalize the order with Wagners, and create spreadsheet of orders.

We will need volunteers for May 5 distribution, 2:30 to 6:30, in two time slots. There will be a class at that time, but we will try to fit children of volunteers into the class if possible.


Momcation: Date is set at Friday, May 13. Aqueelah has already given the credit card info to reserve the rooms.
TO DO in prep for Momcation:
Decisions are to be made about scholarships (Annette??) based on the $500 set aside for the event, and the $70 balance from the Disco Ball.
Celine is preparing a flyer.

Website: the blog is no longer working. Options were discussed, and decision was made for Aqueelah to give Ariah Fine authorization to renew the blog with enomcentral.com for $35. In January Aqueelah will authorize Ariah to set up the blog for a $10 fee that he can get on his site which is what we used last time.

Thank you cards and credit cards for Disco Ball light and music providers: Aqueelah has these ready to send and just has to get to the post office to send them.

March 2011 PAC Meeting

ECFE North PAC Meeting March 1, 2011

Attending: Annette Gagliardi, Valerie Matthews, Laura Oksnevad, Sharon Bartlett, Billi White, Manu Ericksen, Kelly Browne, Muno Musse, Aqueelah Worthen

Treasurer’s report: Profit from Disco Ball: $233. Motion was carried to send debit card for $75 to each to the lights provider and the DJ. The profit balance of $83 will remain in the checking account.

LAC report: Annette reported on the LAC meeting.

South PAC is selling T-shirts, which can be purchased by anyone who’s interested.

Vehicle Day and Cinco de Mayo is scheduled for May.

Fishing with Kids will be the first weekend of June.

Pajama Party will be held at Anne Sullivan on March 3, 5:30 to 7:30. Suggested donation is $5 per family. Families may bring new PJs for People Helping People. A Flyer is available on ECFE website.

“Voices for Children” rally at the Capitol will be held on March 17. The Teddy Bear Band will play.

The Early Childhood Department (including ECFE) is trying to collect data on the impact of ECFE on school readiness, and is working on a new evaluation tool to gather that data.

Online payment for classes is up and working. Easy to use.

LAC is working on a one page flyer with Kindergarten information for parents. The flyer will be vetted by other groups working on the same information and distributed when finalized.

Next LAC meeting is on March 17.

Plant Sale: Annette reported that we have flyers and order sheets ready, with a few changes to the flyer. We are required to give the nursery a preliminary list of how many of each plant packet we will need, due by March 11. ACTION: Laura will work with Aqueelah and Sophie to find out what we purchased last year, and she will send that information as this year’s estimate. Parents who are selling the plants need to get checks at the time the order is taken and attach checks to the order form. Due date for forms is April 8, and pick up is May 5.

BOOK/TOY swap: Annette has received permission to hold the swap in the Elizabeth Hall cafeteria on Friday, April 22, which is Earth Day.

The relevant information for the flyer is: April 22, 2011; 2:00 to 3:30; bring used toys, children’s books and parenting books; pay 25 cents for each item you take. Parents with ECFE kids will help set up at 1:30, and clean up at 3:30. We are giving flyers to all ECFE classes, and the Kdg, and 1st grade Hall parents. It is OK to invite friends to participate.

ACTIONS: Annette will work with the school to meet all requirements for building use and to have child care in the ECFE room, and to have Elizabeth Hall students prepare flyers relating the swap to Earth Day recycling. Billi will dispose of all left over toys and books.

Momcation: Discussion tabled until Celine is present. Date for the event was corrected to May 13th.

Lending Libraries: About 1/8th of the inventory was completed. We will meet again on Monday, March 7th from 2:00 to 3:00 to work on it again. Annette, Laura and Sharon have agreed to work on the books, and Kelly will keep children in the classroom. All are invited to join us!

SUPPLEMENTAL ADDITIONS : It was brought up at the Friday Adventures in Parenting that we might add face painting and family photos as fund raisers at the Disco Ball next year.

We will keep a reserve of $300. So we have about $309 Available for use.

LAC Representatives report: (Annette)

The South PAC is selling T-shirts

    • The LAC has been working on creating signs for all the ECFE sites. They are outside of the classrooms.
    • The LAC has been working to get online payments and now for Spring trimester.
    • Voices for children is March 17

Disco Ball: (Manu)

      -The flyer is out on tables, Annette sent the flyer to staff around the city

      -We have snacks, etc have been donated .

      -We have some signs from last year

      -Valerie has gotten the room permit, ladders, and tables. She will work on the extension cords.

- Cash and sign in. Staff should sit at sign-in table.

-Manu has a cashbox. ECFE has a cash box also

    Volunteers:

    -We need help setting up. Estimate that we need 2 people at the pay/sign up table and 2 people at the snack table and people to help clean up.

ACTION : Laura will email Krista & Sharon about the time change.

Valerie will connect with Sharon Moser to see what other staff will work this event. Valerie will bring the sign-up sheet for this event.

ACTION: Annette will locate the ECFE cash box and put it with the snacks

Manu will email Valerie to touch base about extension cord, volunteers from staff.

Aqueelah will connect with Valerie about the cash / sign in.

    Pricing: juice boxes = 50 cents, All snacks 25 cents

EVENTS UPDATE: Celine

Momcation:

    - Celine would like to set up a sub-committee

    -We got the same place as last year for the same price: it is the Marriotte Courtyard in Maple Grove. Check in is at 3 pm on Friday: check out is Saturday at noon.

    - Momcation Date is Aril 15th – it is a Friday night,

    -10 rooms are reserved. Two people per room($40.00 per person) This Includes breakfast

    -We need money for the pizza and pop for Friday night. This year we have to pre-order the pizza from the Marriotte.

    -The big worry is the money – rooms have to be reserved ahead of time.

    The PAC has a credit card.

    -Celine would like to have small treats in the rooms in advance, and get the yoga instructor.

    -It’s a fun event so we should talk it up in classes.

ACTION: Celine will connect with Sherri R. about the anonymous donor.

If there are people interested to join Celine to get this set up. Celine develop a sign-up sheet for people interested.

PLANT SALE:

The committee for this: Laura, Annette, Billi, (Celine can do the data entry – excel spread sheet knowledge)

ACTION: Annette will email Wagner info to these select people and we will get going via email.

Book Swap: Laura/ Annette

- Annette suggested a toy and book swap meet for April 22- earth day celebration. We could combine it with doing something Earth friendly.

- Aqueelah – perhaps not on that day, but something earlier

- We could have it in conjunction with a class, or some afternoon,

- Or put it with the School night – Thursday night

ACTION: Annette will connect with Hall staff for this event.

Baby Disco Ball February 5, 2011

Third annual Disco Ball sponsored by North Minneapolis PAC (ECFE Parent Advisory Council) will be held on February 5th 2011 Saturday from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at Mona Moede at 2406 Girard Ave. North, Minneapolis. There is a $5 dollar admittance suggested donation per fam-ily. There will be snacks and juice avail-able for purchase. There will be lots of fun music and activities for the everyone.

January 5, 2011 PAC. meeting minutes

PAC meeting January 5, 2011

Treasurer’s report: delivered by Annette: balance is $ 211.54 plus
our $300 reserve, after projected expenses for this school year.

LAC report: Delivered by Annette: salient information is that the
School Fair is January 8, 2011 and East PAC now has a website. There
was discussion of a social for all PACs city wide, and a member of LAC
should be contacting each PAC. Manu suggested that a wellness event
would be a good idea for such a social. There was a reminder that the
Children’s Museum will be open to ECFE parents and children on
Thursday January 13, free.

Lending Libraries: Date is currently being reviewed for a possible
Monday session or two. The childcare room would be open then and
Kelly would keep the children in that room while adults organized and
recorded the books.

Events Updates

Disco Ball, February 5, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Manu is still coordinating
with Lisa Bromwell about the lights and Brian about the music. Lisa
will need help and Manu will find out what kind of help, and offer
help as needed. Sophie is donating the snacks. We will need to
purchase some juice boxes. Manu will ask Laura to contact possible
donors (need to contact donors on PAC letterhead describing the
event—Laura did this last year).

Couples night out, Wednesday, January 19, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Billi
contacted Elsies and found out we could not use the bowling alleys.
Kelly is checking to see if we could use Good Sports at 2nd and
Broadway. If not we will stick with Elsies and use the dining area
only.

Communications:

Celine presented the newsletter. We talked about the BLOG and the
website, and all information should be posted in those places.

LAC Representation: (Annette)

The LAC meeting was held at Hale on November 18, 2010.

  1. There is a Gingerbread House making Event on Dec. 11th at Burroughs school hosted by the South PAC.
  2. Jennifer Barshack (Parents as Teachers) is working on a Transition to Kindergarten Curriculum and is working with NAZ teachers on this.
  3. Kat Kemp (Ready4K) noted that the Jr. League would like to help with advocacy for Early childhood.
  4. Jolene Pearson is a new Community Liaison to the LAC. She will represent “Help Me Grow” which is an infant & special needs umbrella with the district. The website like is: MNParentsKnow.info and the district has a website: Minneapolishelpmegrow.mpls.k12.mn.us This is all about the service providers in the district.
  5. Online Payments: We will test the online payment system by asking members of each PAC to try it for Winter trimester. Selected people can call Ginger at 612.668.2147 on Tues, Thurs. or Fri.

  1. Budget Task Force: the LAC needs 8 to 12 people. The dates will be either Jan 11,12 or Jan. 25,26, 27 (2 out of 3) A reminder that the LAC meeting is Jan 2oth and the Children’s museum is Jan 13th.

Billi White and Aqueelah Worthing will be on the Budget task force. They prefer the 25, 26, 27 of Jan.

  1. High Five/kindergarten flyer: Helen will begin this flyer and the LAC will give feedback. The flyer will a tips to parents about getting ready for kindergarten.
  2. Intro to schools: the LAC suggested that each area invite the welcome center to speak about schools in their area- perhaps a special event hosted by the LAC. This could be a fall event so parents could find out about the schools.

Open Secretary Position: Laura

Barnes & Noble Book fair: Annette

The book fair was held at Barnes & Noble on Nov. 20th. We had 15 staff volunteers, and 5 PAC volunteers. Everyone had a wonderful time. Teachers read all day long.

We made $78.09 in store, $2.00 on Nook sales, $18.07 on Online Sales for a total of $98.16. They well send a check in three weeks.

Discussion about whether we want to do this next year tabled for future months. We need to think of our goals for the literacy event and make a decision about whether it is for money, for the experience or a non-profit event.

Lending Libraries: Laura

    Can teachers be available on site to watch the children when parents work on the library? Annette can at Hall. We will have to talk to Valerie for Mona Moede.

    Annette suggested that one parent could watch kids while others sorted

    ACTION: Annette Ask Sharon if we can get EA time for childcare for this.

This is tabled until after Winter break.

        Events Update

Disco Ball: Feb 5th 4-6 PM

Sophie and her husband will donate the food for this

Manu is the coordinator. Laura will have Manu contact her.

MOMcation:

Celine is the coordinator. Laura will contact her for an update.

Book Swap: is tabled until after the break

Suggested that this be added to the Book fair for a literacy event next fall.

Couples night out:

Billi contacted Elsies (Marshall & 8th) and go some information from them. She will look at Jan 18th or 19th. She will continue doing research and will price out a couple different places. Suggested to have a time for food and a time for bowling.

Plant Sale:

Sophie will help do this. Who will help with this? She has communicated with Wagners. Billi will help Sophie with this. Sherri Rutman was really instrumental in doing this, so will Annette help this year and connect with Linda Case.

Bring to LAC:

What times work best for you for meetings? What are your best days? Can we do a survey to poll parents (Mid year) about what days and times you will like for next year.

Service Opportunities:

Do we, as a PAC, want to do Service as a group? Feed My Starving children and Nursing Homes, Apple picking, Reading buddies, go and read with seniors, were some ideas offered.

What can we do with our children that will encourage altruistic behaviors?

ACTION: Billi & Laura will research what other kinds of things are available to do, in the area.
